Team Deathmatch vs. Free-For-All: Tactical Shifts and Economy of Engagements

Zentaris offers two distinct multiplayer formats that test radically different aspects of your FPS skill set: Team Deathmatch (TDM) and Free-For-All (FFA).

While an inexperienced player might approach both modes with the same "run-and-gun" mindset, high-ranked competitors treat them as entirely different disciplines. Here is how to adjust your tactical philosophy, positioning, and target priority between solo chaos and structured team play.

1. Free-For-All: The Art of Third-Party Engagements

In Free-For-All, every operative on the server is an enemy. The player who wins an FFA lobby is rarely the one with the flashiest aim; it is almost always the player who masters engagement timing and spawn awareness.

The Third-Party Rule

When you hear gunfire between two competitors in the next room:

  • Do NOT rush in blindly: If you enter while both players have full health, you risk getting crossfired by both.
  • Count the audio beats: Wait until you hear the distinct elimination confirmation or an empty-magazine click, indicating one combatant is dead and the survivor is at low HP or reloading.
  • Swing in and finish the survivor: You secure a rapid, low-risk elimination while consuming minimal ammunition.
[Player A] <==== Duel ====> [Player B]
       \ /
        \___ (One dies) ____/
                  |
[Survivor at 25 HP] <----- (You swing in to clean up)

2. Team Deathmatch: Crossfires and Space Creation

In Team Deathmatch, lone-wolf behavior actively harms your squad. If you eliminate one enemy but die immediately afterward, your net team score contribution is exactly zero.

The L-Shaped Crossfire

The most powerful formation in competitive TDM is the L-shaped crossfire:

  • Two friendly players position themselves at a 90-degree angle relative to an incoming chokepoint.
  • When an enemy operative pushes through the doorway, it is impossible for them to take cover from both angles simultaneously. If they aim at Player 1, Player 2 shoots them in the side.
Tactical ParameterFree-For-All (FFA)Team Deathmatch (TDM)
Primary GoalMaximize personal kill velocityMaximize squad kill-to-death differential
Spawn BehaviorDynamic radial spawns around player-free nodesAnchor-based team base spawns
Audio StrategyAggressive listening for third-party opportunitiesTeam comms and sound callouts
Reload SafetyDangerous; always seek hard coverCovered by teammates holding forward angles
PacingHyper-aggressive; constant repositioningDisciplined; tactical territory control

3. Weapon Selection Nuances

  • In FFA: Prefer high-capacity magazines and rapid-reload setups. When two enemies spawn nearby in rapid succession, you cannot afford a 3-second downtime between engagements.
  • In TDM: Prioritize raw first-shot damage and long-distance precision like the MDR Bullpup. Since team spacing allows for coordinated retreats, burst damage and precision headshots will anchor your line.

Recognize the mode you are dropping into, adjust your mental tempo, and execute the right tactical blueprint to dominate your lobby.
